The Department seeks to recruit a research student to work on a collaborative project with the University of Glasgow. The overall aim of the project is to use the emerging field of plasmonics to study the potential for using back-end-of line (BEOL) processing at the silicon foundry to enable both enhancement and diversification of the capabilities of CMOS optical detectors and imagers. Within this interdisciplinary projectm the post-graduate student will be responsible for the design of microelectronic circuits to test the spectral response of different plasmon resonators and integrated systems, particularly a miniature spectrometer that incorporates these circuits.

Successful applicants will have a first or upper second class honours degree in engineering or a closely related discipline and an interest in microelectronics. Evidence of successful completion of an independent project during undergraduate studies or other work experience is desirable, together with the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Successful candidates must be able to write clear, correct and concise English and a demonstrated ability to make clear, well illustrated presentations of scientific material would be advantageous.
