PhD Studentship in Volumetric Imaging
This is an exciting opportunity to join the newly established Neurophotonics Research Laboratory in the Institute of Biophysics, Imaging and Optical Science (IBIOS), The University of Nottingham. IBIOS is a multidisciplinary institute that brings together Biologists, Chemists, Engineers and Physicists with the goal of developing cutting-edge novel imaging technologies and applying them to address important and topical biological problems.
Imaging systems used for biological applications typically require either a laser point to be scanned throughout the sample volume or the imaging plane to be refocused. This limits the speed of imaging and the light collection efficiency.
The Neurophotonics Research Laboratory is developing technology to study how information is encoded, processed and stored in networks of neurons.
This project involves the development of an imaging system capable of simultaneously imaging a whole volume. The system will then be used to study brain tissue. Post-processing of the data will be used to provide confocal quality optical sectioning.
Students should have good mathematical skills and a degree in physics or engineering.
The multidisciplinary environment within IBIOS offers the potential to develop skills in a variety of disciplines.
This studentship is available for Home/EU students, (due to funding restrictions).
Applications with a detailed CV, the names and addresses of two referees, and reasons why you think you are suitable for the scholarship, should be sent to Dr N Russell, Email: Noah.Russell@Nottingham.ac.uk. Please quote ref. ENG/357. Closing date: Open until filled.
