Arthritis Research Campaign National Pain Centre
PhD Studentships
Applications are invited for up to two, four-year PhD studentships within the newly created Arthritis Research Campaign (arc) National Pain Centre at the University of Nottingham.
The successful students will join a multidisciplinary team, developing their project within a programme of translational research into the mechanisms of pain in knee osteoarthritis (OA). Available projects are suitable for those with a background in psychology, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy or evidenced-based medicine. The successful students will choose from the available projects, details of which are provided on the National Pain Centre web site at: www.nottingham.ac.uk/paincentre.
The Arthritis Research Campaign National Pain Centre has recently been created at The University of Nottingham to investigate the mechanisms that lead to the chronic pain experienced by people with arthritis, and to improve the treatment of that pain. This multidisciplinary team of researchers brings together expertise in the investigation of pain mechanisms, pain assessment, and the evaluation of existing and novel analgesics.
Students must have a UK 2.1 degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
These studentships include the payment of tuition fees at the Home/EU rate and a maintenance stipend of approximately £13,650 per annum (2010/11), in the first instance. Non-EU students are welcome, but they would have to self fund the difference between the Home/EU and international fee. The University of Nottingham offers some scholarships to cover fees in open competition with other non-EU students.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr D A Walsh, tel: 0115 823 1751, Email: David.Walsh@Nottingham.ac.uk, or the principal supervisor of specific projects.
Applications with a detailed CV, the names and addresses of two referees, together with an indication of which project(s) you wish to be considered for, should be sent to Dr D A Walsh, Director, Arthritis Research Campaign National Pain Centre, Academic Rheumatology, Clinical Sciences Building, City Hospital, Nottingham, NG5 1PB.
