The distributed computing group at the department of information
technology and electrical engineering at ETH Zurich is looking for
Research Assistants / Ph.D. Students in Distributed Algorithms
The distributed computing group is a young research group. Currently
we are ten members. We are interested in a variety of hot topics in
the area of distributed computing, such as distributed algorithms,
peer-to-peer computing, wireless ad hoc or sensor networks, multi-core
systems, or social and mobile networks. In our group we try to apply
and unite the approaches and techniques of algorithmic theory and
systems implementation. Some members of our group focus on algorithms
and analysis, some on systems design and building. All of us work
together to build scalable, fault-tolerant, and efficient primitives
and applications for the distributed future of computing. Please visit
the group web site for more information.
We are looking for new members with a strong algorithmic background,
and a Master’s degree in e.g. Computer Science or Mathematics. A
candidate should be attracted by and proficient in areas such as
approximation algorithms, complexity theory, distributed algorithms,
graph theory, online computation, computational geometry,
probabilistic algorithms, combinatorics, or optimization. A new group
member can choose and shape a project according to his or her
interests and talents within the first months of employment.
Successful candidates are expected to work towards a doctoral degree,
and participate in the teaching activities of the group. To get a
better understanding of these open positions, please visit our web
page, and have a look at our theoretical publications, i.e.
publications at conferences such as FOCS, PODC, SPAA, SODA, or STOC.

M.Sc. and Ph.D. positions in Geochemistry at the University of Manitoba
The geochemistry group in the department of geological sciences, University of Manitoba
have funds to support several M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Projects include ore deposits,
evolution of seawater and atmospheric composition, tectonics and geochronology.
Students interested in the application of stable and radiogenic isotopes to these or similar
geological projects are encouraged to apply. The department of Geological Sciences has
recently acquired several new instruments including, two Delta V Plus with peripherals for
the analysis of H, C, O, N and S, and a Cameca 7f magnetic sector secondary ion mass
spectrometer (SIMS) for light and heavy isotopic analysis. These new labs complement the
X-ray and microbeam facilities, which include SX100 electron microprobe, SEM, LA-ICP-
MS, FTIR, Mossbauer, and powder and single crystal diffractometers.
Interested students should contact:

We have two openings for PhD candidates interested in working on 3D
shape and motion recovery from video. Topics of immediate interest
include modeling crowd behavior using multiple cameras, real-time
tracking for visual servoing of a robotic plane, and automated
analysis of brain imagery.

Karolinska Institutet is looking for a PhD position in Cognitive Neuroscience
Workplace: Department of Neuroscience
Form of employment: Temporary
Scope: Full-time
Description of the work group/equivalent and its work/focus:
Ehrsson’s group at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, has funding available for
a 4 year PhD position in cognitive neuroscience. Our work focuses on how we come to
experience that we own our body, and why we experience that we are located inside our
physical bodies. To address these issues we use a combination of behavioural and
functional imaging methods. For more information about our research visit

The ecoSERVICES Group at Arizona State University welcomes
applications from prospective PhD students interested in the
resilience and sustainability of coupled human-ecological systems, the
economics of (renewable) natural resource management and
decision-theoretic approaches to the management and valuation of
ecosystem services. This is an opportunity for students to develop
competence across applied ecology, economics, and systems modeling.
