An opening position for a PhD student in epidemiology / biostatistics is available in the research group on respiratory health of children and adolescents. This group has four full-time researchers and collaborates with the University Childrens’ Hospital of Bern (Inselspital) and several research groups in England.
The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) employs some 100 researchers, provides undergraduate and post-graduate education and carries out research in a range of disciplines relevant to Clinical Epidemiology and Public Health. ISPM offers a lively, interdisciplinary environment with excellent computing and library facilities. The PhD training will be organized by the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Bern as well as the Swiss School of Public Health and is financed by a scholarship from the Swiss National Science Foundation, assuring an excellent training programme. The job counts towards training for an FMH in Social and Preventive Medicine, and provides research experience for a career in paediatrics or paediatric pulmonology.
Childhood wheezing disorders, including asthma, are the most common chronic health problem in childhood. Yet, we know relatively little about the factors that determine whether a child gets asthma, and whether or not he then proceeds to develop chronic disease or grows out of it.
The aim of the PhD project is to develop models for predicting the onset and persistence of childhood wheeze and asthma, which can be used in clinical practice. This includes extensive information about heritable factors, environmental exposures and respiratory symptoms during early childhood from existing datasets of large population-based childhood cohort studies (N=10,000; www.leicestercohorts.org).
The specific tasks of the PhD student include:
- Perform a systematic review of the existing literature on risk factors for onset and persistence of wheeze and asthma, to be published as a review article.
- Analyse original data from a large cohort study (www.leicestercohorts.org). Different statistical methods will be explored and applied to optimise the quality of prediction models. Results will be translated to tools for use in clinical practice.
- Prepare graphs and tables based on the analysis, write reports and scientific manuscripts. At least three first author papers are planned for the PhD student (more are welcomed).
- Present results at national and international conferences.
- As a member of the research group on airway disease, the PhD student will also contribute to the management of the Leicester Cohort Studies (questionnaire design, newsletters, data preparation, survey logistics). This will involve travel to England 2-3 times per year and close collaboration with the team there.
Requirements:
- Diploma in medicine, or MSc or equivalent degree in epidemiology, (applied) statistics, natural sciences or psychology.
- An interest in applied research in the areas of child health, respiratory disease, epidemiology, biostatistics and public health.
- Sound computing skills (Word, Excel, Power Point)
- Knowledge of statistical software (ideally Stata) and experience with a variety of standard and advanced methods in biostatistics would be an advantage.
- Languages: excellent knowledge of English is indispensable; German French or Italian would be an advantage.

Die Forschungsgruppe zu Atemwegserkrankungen bei Kindern bietet ab sofort eine Doktorandenstelle (PhD oder MD-PhD) in Biostatistik / Epidemiologie an. In unserer Gruppe arbeiten vier weitere wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter an verwandten Fragestellungen und wir sind eng vernetzt mit Forschungsgruppen im Inselspital (Bern) und in England (Leicester, Bristol).
Das Institut für Sozial- und Präventivmedizin (ISPM) der Universität Bern beschäftigt etwa 100 Leute und trägt wesentlich zur Forschung und Ausbildung im Bereich öffentliche Gesundheit und klinische Epidemiologie bei. Das ISPM bietet ein dynamisches und interdisziplinäres Arbeitsumfeld mit exzellenten Ressourcen. Die Stelle ist durch ein Doktorandenstipendium des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds finanziert mit ausgezeichneten Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten. Angerechnet als Ausbildungsstelle für Facharzt FMH in Sozial- und Präventivmedizin (3 Jahre) oder Forschungserfahrung für Laufbahn im der Pädiatrie oder pädiatrischen Pneumologie (Fremdjahr).
Atemwegserkrankungen, insbesondere Asthma, gehören zu den häufigsten Gesundheitsproblemen bei Kindern. Die Faktoren, die bestimmen, ob ein Kind erkrankt und ob die Krankheit von kurzer oder langer Dauer ist, sind jedoch unzulänglich bekannt. Das Ziel der Dissertation ist es, Prognosemodelle zu entwickeln, die das Eintreten und den Verlauf von Atemwegserkrankungen voraussagen und die in der klinischen Praxis umgesetzt werden können. Dazu sollen die umfangreichen Daten zu Symptomen, Umwelteinflüssen und vererbbaren Faktoren aus einer grossen Kohortenstudie ausgewertet werden (N=10’000, Int J Epidemiol 2007;36:977-85).
Zu den Aufgaben des Doktoranden gehören:
- Eine systematische Literaturrecherche zu Risikofaktoren für Entstehung und Verlauf von Asthma bei Kindern, die in Form eines systematischen Übersichtsartikels publiziert wird.
- Die eigenständige statistische Analyse von Originaldaten aus einer grossen Kohortenstudie (www.leicestercohorts.org). Es sollen verschiedene statistische Methoden angewendet werden, um möglichst präzise Voraussagen zu einzelnen Kindern zu machen. Die Resultate sollen in vereinfachter Form auch in der klinischen Praxis anwendbar sein.
- Die Darstellung der Ergebnissen in Tabellen und Graphiken und das Verfassen von Berichten und wissenschaftlichen Manuskripten. Es sind mindestens drei Erstautorpublikationen vorgesehen.
- Die Präsentation von Ergebnissen an nationalen und internationalen Kongressen.
- Daneben wird der Doktorand, als Mitarbeiter des Atemwegsteams, auch bei der Leitung und Betreuung der Studie mithelfen (Fragebogengestaltung, Newsletter, Datenaufbereitung, Logistik). Dies beinhaltet zwei bis drei Kurzaufenthalte in England pro Jahr und enge Zusammenarbeit mit dem dortigen Team.
Anforderungen:
- Studium der Medizin, oder MSc (oder gleichwertiger Abschluss) in den Bereichen: Epidemiologie, (angewandte) Statistik, Naturwissenschaften oder Psychologie.
- Interesse an der angewandten Forschung in den Bereichen Kindergesundheit, respiratorische Krankheiten, Epidemiologie, Biostatistik und Public Health.
- Gute analytische Fähigkeiten.
- Gute Computerkenntnisse (Word, Excel, Power Point).
- Grund- oder fortgeschrittene Kenntnisse in statistischer Software (idealerweise STATA) und Methoden der Biostatistik sind von Vorteil.
- Sprachen: Sehr gute Kenntnisse in Englisch, Deutsch oder Französisch sind von Vorteil.

Une position de thèse en épidémiologie / biostatistiques est ouverte dans le groupe de recherche sur les maladies respiratoires chez les enfants et adolescents. Le groupe de recherche, composé de 4 collaborateurs, travaille activement avec les groupes de recherche de l’hôpital pédiatrique universitaire de Berne (Inselspital) et plusieurs groupes de recherche en Angleterre.
L’Institut de Médecine Sociale et Préventive (ISPM) emploie près de 100 collaborateurs, dispense un enseignement supérieur de qualité et supporte de nombreux projets de recherche dans le domaine de l’épidémiologie clinique et la santé publique. Les dysfonctionnements respiratoires (respirations sifflantes, asthme) sont les maladies chroniques les plus communes durant l’enfance. A ce jour, les facteurs qui déterminent si un enfant va développer de l’asthme et s’il développera une maladie chronique ou non sont peu connus. L’objectif principal de la thèse est de développer des modèles pour prédire le premier épisode et la persistance des dysfonctionnements respiratoires chez l’enfant. Pour cela, les facteurs héréditaires et environnementaux et les symptômes précoces de la maladie durant l’enfance enregistrés dans des bases de données pourront être utilisés. Les données sont celles d’une large cohorte d’enfants (N=10,000 ; www.leicestercohort.org).
Le(la) candidat(e) devra principalement:
- Conduire une revue systématique de la littérature sur les facteurs de risque du premier épisode et de la persistance des dysfonctionnements respiratoires (respiration sifflante, asthme), à faire paraitre sous forme de publication scientifique.
- Analyser les données d’une large cohorte d’enfants (www.leicestercohorts.org). Différentes méthodes statistiques pourront être explorées et utilisées pour optimiser la qualité de la prédiction. Les résultats seront traduits en des outils applicables à la pratique clinique.
- Préparer des graphes et tableaux de résultats, écrire des rapports et des publications scientifiques. Au moins 3 publications en tant que premier auteur sont prévues.
- Communiquer les résultats lors de conférences nationales et internationales.
- Le candidat contribuera aussi au management des ” Leicester Cohort Studies ” (design des questionnaires, newsletters, préparation des données, suivi logistique des études en cours et futures). Cela implique de voyager en Angleterre 2-3 fois par an pour rencontrer les collaborateurs.
Compétences requises:
- Diplôme en médecine ou MSc ou équivalent en épidémiologie, statistiques (appliquées), sciences naturelles ou psychologie.
- Intérêt pour la recherche appliquée en pédiatrie, maladie respiratoire, épidémiologie, biostatistiques et santé publique.
- Connaissance des outils bureautiques (Word, Excel, Power Point).
- Connaissance d’un logiciel statistique (idéalement STATA) et expérience d’application des méthodes statistiques standards et avancées seraient un plus.
- Langues: excellente connaissance de l’anglais indispensable; Allemand, français ou italien serait un plus.
