selection for PhD positions in the varied fields (see annex 1) covered by the
graduate school.
From January 2011 onward, a maximum of six scholarships will be available for
PhD research in the fields covered by WASS. The PhD positions are what is called
“free”, which means no project description has been drawn up in advance, PhD
candidates are invited to submit their own proposals, and the best candidates
with the best proposals will be selected.
If you wish to apply for a PhD scholarship and participation in the PhD
programme of WASS, please submit the following before October 15th , 2010, to
wass@wur.nl (Wageningen School of Social Sciences, Wageningen, the Netherlands)
1. A letter in which you describe the motivation for your application for a PhD
research position, how the dissertation can be completed in the given period of
time and your present situation and employment;
2. The PhD Proposal using the form which accompanies this call
3. An indication of the costs for fieldwork, research, materials and travel
4. A Curriculum Vitae
5. A List of publications or, if you are a recent graduate, a list of papers you
have written
6. A Copy of your Master’s degree examination grades
7. Results of TOEFL test (including the specific requirements for passing the
test).
8. Two letters of recommendation (one should be from outside Wageningen
University), using the form which accompanies this call
The application must be written in English
The deadline is very strict: the proposal has to be in at 9.00 AM on the 15th
October!
Assessment of applications
After submitting your application, you will receive a letter of confirmation
with further information about the selection process.
The applications will be subjected to:
1)A preliminary screening on completeness and compliance with the criteria by
WASS Office.
2)A first selection by an Assessment Committee.
3)The proposals and candidates selected in this first round will be reviewed by
two independent, anonymous reviewers and then discussed in a second selection by
an Assessment Committee. A telephone conversation with set questions can be part
of the procedure.
4)Candidates selected after the first and second screenings will be invited for
an interview and presentation of their proposal.
5)The final decisions will be made by the Director of WASS shortly after the
interviews and on the advice of the Assessment Committee.
Applications will be judged on the basis of the minimum admission requirements
for a PhD at Wageningen University, the grades of the master degree, the
reference letters, the proposal itself, the intended research, the reviews of
two independent peers and the result of the interview.
PhD candidates are to complete their project with a dissertation within a period
of four years.
The scholarships cover the PhD salary costs, including overhead costs according
to the integral cost funding of WU. The specific research cost, travel cost,
etc, should be covered by the supervising chair group on accepting the
allocation of the PhD.
